Frog Availability
Winter, 2012
In this space I try to offer a fairly updated discussion of the captive bred offspring that are available at this time, as well as any new information about dry goods, shipping, and projects which are coming to fruition! This text area is a general overview, followed by the more frequently updated table at the bottom of the page, which shows each species or form that we have in "production" right now, as well as their prices. Just scroll down for this table.
Please note that there are several other areas on the website for you to find information about the frogs we work with, such as the species list , where you can find some pictures of the different frogs we offer, and specific information about them. We also have a large selection of caresheets which cover many topics related to dart frogs. I feel that there is enough information presented in these caresheets to get you started with dart frogs, so please try to find the answers to your questions in these locations before contacting me!
You may have questions about how we ship our frogs, if so you can check out the "Animal Shipping and Live Arrival Guarantee" page, which covers terms and conditions, as well as information about how we ship our frogs and lizards.
Site Up Date!!
We have launched our newly redesigned website! We have a new graphic look for the first time in about seven or eight years, and we've done some tinkering with the site layout to make it more intuitive and easy to use. Feed back and comments are welcome! We also have a blog, which I will probably begin using to take the place of some of the site related news that is here, along with discussions of new breeding projects and so on.
Terrariums and Supplies
Dart Frogs
Of course, while terrarium supplies are an important side business for us, our main focus is on our effort to provide you with as wide a selection of dart frogs as possible, at a fair price. Maintaining and breeding this wide variety of frogs is a fairly time consuming job, and this is our true passion here.
Right now things are quiet on the breeding front, this is typical of fall here, its probably our slowest season for actual breeding, although we are usually pretty well stocked up on frogs, due to all the babies, juveniles and sub-adult frogs we have on hand from prior breeding. See the specific sections below for more info.
Sexed Pairs
We are using the new site to showcase our sexed pairs- as time permits we will post photos of these pairs in our online store , so you will be able to pick out a pair you like. This is the perfect way for beginners to get started in the hobby, and its a great way for anyone to add a potential breeding pair to their frog collection.
However due to the time involved in getting pictures and posting them, only a fraction of the pairs we have available will make it to the store, so below is a list of the potential sexed pairs we have available now.
- Tinctorius "Azureus"
-
Tinctorius "Surinam Cobalt"
- Auratus "Panamanian Green and Bronze"
- Auratus "Blue"
- Auratus "Campana"
Check out select Sexed Pairs of frogs in our Online Store!
D. auratus
We are excited to be working with two new forms of D. auratus, and are looking forward to be able to offer them to you as well, but this will be a few months yet. The first new auratus is the fabled "El Cope" form. El Cope is a mountain in Panama, and around the base are found these large auratus. They are basically a green and black form, but they are considered potentially the most bold and outgoing form of auratus known. The parents of our founders here were collected by a zoo curator many years ago, and are 100% locality guaranteed! Due to the way most dart frogs are collected, this sort of thing is fairly rare, and while its not that important in many cases, its always nice to know! We have a few of these on hand now, and should have them from time to time in the future, just ask if they are not available in the store.
The second new D. auratus form is the Highland Green and Bronze form. This is a form that has been around in the hobby for years, but has never been particularly common. We acquired some offspring last summer, and we had some breeding this spring which has resulted in some offspring which are going to be available soon. These frogs arent particularly bold, but they are one of the more unusual and beautiful frogs, in particular as they get older the bronze areas can fade out to almost white. This is not the norm, but it does happen, and for the most part you can expect them to get much lighter as they get older.
A. galactonotus
Red and orange galacs produced well this past spring and summer and we are getting babies out of the water regularly. The first oranges should be ready to ship in November. We are continuing to go through the waiting list for the reds, its getting shorter, although this is largely due to a computer crash that resulted in the loss of our wait list past about January 2010! If you were on that list and want the reds, drop me a note! We've got a decent number of solid orange galacs. This is a fairly rare frog, and very beautiful.......opportunities to acquire this frog don't come along often so if you've ever wanted some, now is the time!
Phyllobates species
We have a few young vittatus, everything from juveniles to young adults. Also picked up a nice batch of zoo produced mint terribilis, and have those available as juveniles up to subadults. Otherwise we aren't working with phyllobates species at the moment.
D. leucomelas
Tinctorius and Azureus
Right now we have lots of tincs, many of which have gone into our "growing out" program, so they can grow up and become sexed pairs! This winter promises to be one of the best ever for sexed pairs of tinctorius here, besides the usual azureus and cobalts, we should have Matecho, Alanis, Oyapok, Citronella, Tafelberg, and Green Sipaliwini sexed pairs available.
Thumbnail frogs
We have really ramped up the thumbnail production, and have lots of juvenile Chazuta imitator, Varadero imitator, Vanzolini, Amazonicus, regular vents, etc. Watch for sexed pairs of some of these as well!
Pumilio
First a note on taxonomy, the entire tribe of "obligate eggfeeders" (species like pumilio, histrionica, and granulifera among others) have been reclassified from Dendrobates to Oophaga. These frogs are still considered "dart frogs", and this change simply reflects further clarification of the Dendrobates family tree.
We are also producing a few Cayo Nancy pumilio. These frogs are simply stunning, with a solid red body and some white on the feet.
Other Frogs
Occasionally we dabble in frog species other than dart frogs. For the past ten years we have been working with the Solomon Isle Leaf frog, and there looks to be a good "crop" of these on the way, with some ready to ship now. We have also been working with an awesome little tree frog from Malaysia called the Cinnamon Frog, Ncytixalus pictus. These frogs are only a little over one inch long, and are a lovely shade of burgundy. They vary actually, and the nicest are a glowing light red color, while most are a reddish brown color that is also beautiful. The single most beautiful feature is the way the upper half of the eye is white. This white color is repeated on the body in white spots. These guys are beginning to produce, we should have a steady supply for a while on these.
We also got some of the Surinam Tree frogs that came in the past few months, and hope to have something to show for this in the future....
Wanted
This is a new feature, please look this over if you have surplus frogs available. We are looking for the following types of frogs. We will pay cash, or trade for other frogs or terrarium supplies.
In addition to the frogs listed below, we are interested in purchasing or trading for any frogs we do not have on our "Currently Available" listing.
Phyllobates terribilis Mint Adults
R. reticulatus
Orange galactonotus males
Red Galactonotus males
Lorenzo Tinctorius
French Guiana Cobalt tinctorius Males
Dart Frog Availability at a glance, October 2011
The purpose of this table is to allow you to see what frogs are available now, and what might be available in the near future. Note that the froglets too small to ship and the tadpoles are listed for informational purposes, we do not sell tadpoles or baby frogs.
Frogs listed as ready to go are well established juveniles, in most cases one inch in length and three to five months old. The one inch standard applies to the tinctorius, auratus and other larger dart frogs in particular, obviously many of the other frogs are too small as adults for this to apply.
