The island of Bastimentos is one of the larger in the Bocas archipelago, and several different dart frog species seem to occur there. One of these is this form of pumilio, which carries the name of the island. Generally they are a red, orange or yellow frog, with black spotting on the back and legs. Often the feet are white, and in some specimens the back legs may be cream or white as well. There is considerable variation even within this morph of pumilio, for instance we are working with frogs with large oblong spots, frogs with fine speckling, frogs with no spots, frogs which have a gold dust outline around the spots..….

Of the pumilio I have worked with, this form is the boldest, and most active. They are also among the most readily bred in captivity. For some reason many of the forms of pumilio that have been available in the past as wild caught specimens are no longer in the hobby, and proved difficult to successfully breed over more than one generation. I have observed this myself with some morphs, but the Bastimentos form generally seems to be fairly readily bred.

Primarily a terrestrial frog, but climbs extensively, and will utilize low vegetation a good bit. I find best success with this frog is in a smaller tank, (tanks over 20 gallon make it harder to find the babies!), with pairs only.

Yes, should be ok with other species if not crowded, however breeding success is probably compromised by keeping with other frogs.
