Bird Poop Frog, T. asperum Juveniles

Bird Poop Frog, T. asperum Juveniles

Theloderma asperum is a small frog which is found in the rainforests of tropical Asia, countries such as Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, and and Vietnam.  These frogs are small, reaching  only around 1.5 inches in length, and like most frogs are nocturnal.  In their native habitat they seem to seek out hollow trees with water pools inside for breeding and hiding during the day.   These frogs have very interesting color changing capabilities, and will turn paler colors (white) while out of the water.  As you can see from the photos, this odd coloration helps the frogs disappear when they are flattened on a tree trunk or other piece of wood.  It also is what gives them their nickname, bird poop frog, although for all I know, the real thing they are trying to imitate is lichens that grow on tree trunks!  They spend a lot of time in the water, but will often sleep out of the water, which makes them a little easier to find in the tank.

I recommend keeping them much like Mossy or Cinnamon frogs. They appreciate a lot of water in their tank.  These frogs are a very easy to keep frog, and can be kept in groups without problems. Under the right conditions they can be very prolific!
