Bumble Bee Dart frog, D. leucomelas, Large Juvenile

Bumble Bee Dart frog, D. leucomelas, Large Juvenile

Dendrobates leucomelas, or the bumble bee dart frog, originates in Venezuela and surrounding countries.  As is often the case with dart frogs, multiple different color forms exist, but by far the most common is this one, with bands that vary between yellowish orange and orangish yellow, (been down this rabbit hole a few times trying to decide what color these frogs are!) and black spotting mixed into the bands.
These frogs are difficult to pin down in terms of their tank behavior, but for most people they are moderately bold, and will be seen regularly.  Occasionally for one reason or another they may turn out a little more shy. This frog does well in groups of their own species, and four or five are fine in a 30 gallon or larger tank, or three in a 20 gallon.  It is also a good choice of dart frog for a mixed species terrarium.  Often this frog is a prolific breeder and has a beautiful call, very similar to other dart frogs like auratus, except much louder...not that they are a loud dart frog, but they will be heard through out the room they are in easily.  The call is a pleasant low pitched trilling.  They generally call mostly during daylight hours so don't worry about them keeping you up!
We provide a bit more detailed information about this frog on our  Dart Frog Species Profile page for this species, here.
