Pyrrosia christii

The pyrrosia family of ferns are often called "tongue ferns" for the upright habit of the individual leaves many produce. All are Old World ferns, with this species originating in Borneo, and while I found it difficult to find any information on this plants habitat, I assume it must be from a rainforest type environment.  It tolerates the high humidity of a terrarium well, and while it is a slow grower, it is steady.

For me the leaves generally reach around four to five inches, and it prefers to grow epiphytically, attaching itself to its mount with thin wiry roots.  As is typical of the pyrrosia genus, this fern has a layer of short hairs on the top and bottom of the leaves, known as felt.  Overall it is a striking terrarium plant, and extremely rare and hard to find!

This offering is for rhizome cutting with about three to four leaves.

To establish in your terrarium, mount on a well drained surface with good light, on an open airy bed of sphagnum moss or similar. I'm growing mine just a foot or so under led shoplights, so it tolerates quite a bit of light, although this is probably more than is required! Spray daily.

Upon request, a mounting kit will be provided with your fern, at no additional cost.  This mounting kit is not much, really, but has a few aids to mount your fern, the kit will help you fix the fern in place while it gets established! Kit includes roughly 18 inches of coated wire tie, three mounting staples and enough sphagnum moss to mount the plant.

In case you are not familiar, mounting a plant is a fairly straightforward thing to do, once you get the idea.  So, where a "normal" plant might want to be planted in the substrate of the terrarium, some plants are more likely to grow with its roots on the surface of the substrate, or the background. While these plants will grow over fairly dry areas once they are established, they often require a little more pampering to get started. Sphagnum moss (long fiber) is perfect for this, it is open and airy, but holds water well.

Plant Shipping info!

Many of our plants will be eligible for our FedEx 2nd Day Flat rate shipping.  We are delighted to be able to offer this service, as we feel it is a big improvement over Priority Mail, and only a couple of bucks more.  Note that you can change your shipping choice to another service option if you like, and in some cases this may be needed for safety.  Please keep in mind that depending on weather conditions you may need to have your plants held for pickup at a local FedEx location, or have your order shipped via overnight service.  We may contact you and suggest one of these options if we feel that your shipment is not able to be shipped safely with your selected form of shipping.  While the cart defaults to the flat rate shipping, you can change this in the check out process.

Live arrival guarantee- Plants are guaranteed to arrive alive and in good condition if temps along shipping route and at your location are between 40 and 80 degrees.  If temps are going to be outside of these parameters, especially at your location on the day of delivery, we highly recommend having the package held for pickup at your local FedEx station.  Either input this address as the "ship to" address, or ask and we use your home address to find the nearest appropriate FedEx location.

In the event of an issue please contact us as soon as possible.  Replacement is the sole remedy for live arrival issues, shipping for replacement order is the responsibility of the buyer.
